What is it?
Microsoft just released Copilot Tasks into limited research preview, and it’s basically an AI system that sits on Microsoft’s cloud servers and does work for you without you having to ask it every single time.
Here’s the mechanic: you describe what you want done in plain English. You tell it things like “track our campaign performance daily” or “draft email summaries from our customer calls”. Then Copilot Tasks goes off and handles it. It runs scheduled tasks, manages subscriptions, monitors listings, drafts content, all while you’re doing something else. When it needs to do something important, it asks your approval first. When it’s done, you get a completion report.
The key shift here is persistence. This isn’t a chatbot you chat with. It’s an agent running in the background, working asynchronously, like hiring a diligent assistant who checks in before making big moves.
Why does it matter?

Also keep an eye on how approval workflows develop. The more granular your control over what the agent does and doesn’t do without asking, the more confident you’ll be letting it run unsupervised.
